happy transit strike
Today's Transit Strike feels a lot like the Blackout of 2003 - really fun for the first day but shaping up to be a pain in the ass every day after.
For the record, I think I'm on the side of the Transit Workers Union (TWU) - they're looking for better pay and benefits and the MTA just blew an $800 budget surplus by offering a $1 discount off Metrocards for a period of 2 weeks. That's a waste - put it towards hooking up the workers with a holiday bonus (or at least towards fixing the F train).
There's definitely parts of this story I'm missing - like what kind of benefits the transit workers current get (or don't get). Are they currently getting screwed or do they have it pretty good? Were they hustling for better benefits / wages before the surplus was found? (or do they already have it good and are just being greedy about getting a piece of the surplus?). And where's the rest of the $800m if the Metrocard discounts only cost $100m?
In any case, I stayed home today. I've been watching NY1 and listening to the Quad City DJs (choo choo!) repeat aaaalllll day long. [mp3, 9mb]
