jill and steve get married! (and the rest of us are invited to the wedding event of the season)
Hello! And welcome to what's about to be the longest teendrama recap ever. As you may have read this is the summer of 1000 weddings (or 6). Mike.d + Jos a month ago, Sara + Stephen two weekends ago and, maybe the highlight of the Friend Summer Wedding Season: Jill + Steve's wedding (july 14!).
Come'on, you know these kids - Jill is literally my Very First Friend from college (you know, I should put that on-line one of these days). We've been friends for, what, 13 years, all the way from Syracuse through NYC. And of course we've still all bestest friends with the rest of the Dinner Club(tm) crew from NYC, the west coast and, er, the midwest and DC and Texas.
Steve is one of MF's bestest friends from college. We met years ago at Bates College, again in Pamplona (6 years ago!) and have survived five trips to Beaver Creek together and hundreds of dollars worth of Big Big Hunter tours.
This was one of the wedding of the events of the season for two reasons - (a) I introduced them (recognize!) way back in, I dunno, 2002? and (b) waaaay back when Jill + Steve first started dating I remember chatting w/ MF and saying, "Can you imagine if they ever got married - what an amazing wedding that would be???"
... oh happy couple (at the rehearsal dinner) just in case you had no idea who I was talking about for the last 3 minutes. I'm just setting the stage here, people.
So Friday! Rehearsal dinner was at 7p so I skipped out on work and drove up w/ Ann (my babygirl date!). Masterplan was to get out of NYC 8am (whatever) and spend the day lounging by the pool at our what-we-though-was-a-luxury-hotel. However, due to the internet and it's procrastination powers (and the fact that I had to pick my newly fixed car) we didn't get out of the city till around 12:30. Oops.
Oh, wedding was up in Skaneateles, way in upstate NY (about 30m from Syracuse). We hit the Friendly's on the way up: waffle fries, grilled cheese, burger and a mf'ing FRIBBLE (Ann, scared of the Fribble brand, opted out and ended up with a milkshake - sucker!)
And five hours later, the sweet-sweet Birds Nest Motel. Nice on the outside...
... pretty shitty on the inside. Nice and 70s'd up, reeking of smoke and sporting a sliding glass door w/ no screen.
Pre-rehearsal, we lounged near the pool w/ Jay.L (Bates + Beaver Creek) and his loveley wife. Enjoyed a few rounds of Bud cans...
... pulled some dead frogs out of the pool (... just a lil' sip, buddy) ...
teendrama, er, 15 days in review! (w/ exclusive turducken pics!)
I'm behind on teendrama so, loyal reader, you get stuck 12 days worth of teendrama told via 15 pics...
Mon 11/6 - Continuing the "How I Became a Master Chef" thread, JJ and I cooked up some double-breaded fried chicken the other night. That's right, double-dip, double-breaded and then fried up in two inchs of vegetable oil. I think we overdid the double-dip (I felt kind of dirty for like 2 days), but still....
Tues 11/7 - LVHRD (CLL) PHN LCKN (read: Cell Phone Lock-In) @ MOMA. Check your cell phone at the door (they put it in these little ziplock bags) and listen to this really loud band in a really big space with really bad acoustics. Come'on Happy Corp, I'm just busting you - I love you guys! Oh, free beers = good beers.
Btw, every confiscated phone was hung on this 60 ft long wall. Apparently at the end of the night they had some magic internet machine that made all the cellphones ring and light up and the same time. Didn't anyone YouTube that shit? Come'on!
While waiting for the elevator on my way out, I ran into four ninjas (and a Doug.J in a spacesuit). Btw, more pics on Flickr
Wed 11/8 - Jill's Happy Birthday dinner @ Mercadito in the E.Village. Sorry, no photos sucka.
saturdays are for back-to-back-to-back-to-back birthday parties
Hey, I'm not even a week late with this one! Last Friday me + Courtney + Dianne took a field trip over to the Javits Center to check out the Wired Next Fest - a science fair's worth of all the stuff you read about in Wired magazine. We got there around 1pm, I paid my $12 to get in (NYU student rate, sucka!) and walked around and checked-out such half-broken exhibits such as this magic tech door... which is supposed to open a custom-sized space for you to walk through... but something was broken so I ended up having to step and rotate and squeeze my way thru (which made the guy that built it mad because some Japanese TV show was filming my twisty entrance).
Saturn's hybrid car exhibit (complete with mini projected hologram man) = boring.
Oh, and then there was the army of wifi bunnies that caused Courtney to go all AWOL. (ps: the room strangly smelled like rabbit poo. real rabbit poo. not robot rabbit poo. robots don't poo!)
Okay, so that was Friday DAY, and then Friday night (what did I do again?) Happycorp happy hour to <something else> to BackRoom to meet up w/ Steve and a very crunked Jill (and Jill's friend from Las Vegas on the left). We were posing to take this photo, steping back, back, backwards and then...
... Crunked Jill takes a digger, we all crashed down on this table of girls and their drinks, teacups spill, candle gets knocked on the rug (one girl yelled "FIRE!") and then we just rolled around on the floor for like two minutes. Crunked Jill was all "ooohhhhhhh my leeeegggggg" and we, of course, were all "whatever"...
... until she forwarded me this pic on Monday. Ha! Crunked Jill, you so crazy!
why is it sometimes so hard to remember what happened on saturday?
Met up with Jesse.O and his entourage for drinks @ Dusk late last night. Carney and Kearney were still there(, of course). I spent a good five minutes with Carney trying to remember exactly what we did this weekend (er, two days ago), specifically Saturday. That's kind of sad. The Thurs night VMAs + three day weekend = makes everyone a little hazy.
If you want to go A-list, check out Carney and Krucoff (and that starfucker Matt.U) over on thecobrasnake.com (hint: middle column). If you want to go B-list, you can find Krucoff and Carney again over on Gawker. If C-list is more your thing, I'm an background extra on the Best Week Ever's recap. Post VMAs we ended up @ Annex. Everyone in the world was hungover on Friday.
Friday. Caught up on my Tivo. (Prison Break!)
Saturday. Field trip to the Upper West Side. CZ made dinner. I made out with this girl's headshot. She looks like Rachel Leigh Cook!
Jill text'ed me about Nat getting engaged (congrats, btw!). I sent my congrats to Natasha by mistake. Huh.
Saturday night ends at 2A, er, Backroom.
ps: Dianne, we *totally* should have distracted that girl's friends at 2A with a pizza. So many regrets!
Sunday. Field trip to The Upper East Side (Mel's 30th bday). Me + Steve dressed up in our best above-50th-Street getup.
Mel + Jackie + Beth + Adam. All friends from the Syracuse days.
Then to Lolita -> Sing Sing on Ave A (too crowded) -> then we kicked this stick (named Stickey) all the way to Scratcher.
And when we got sick of playing telephone at Scratcher (die die die to the losers at the far end of the bar who didn't want to play), we hit up Sing Sing karaoke @ St. Marks. We posed with our new NYU freshman BFFs on the way.
Dear Battjer, how do you get your digi to take pics with those magiclighteffects? I've been trying "nighttime" mode but it sucks. So I switched to "underwater" mode which is brighter for sure, but also crazier. Please advise.
Lolita -> Scratcher -> Sing Sing -> The Automat. Has everyone heard about this already? (from Gothamist. ps: Automat co-founded by an ITP grad) It's like the little ham and cheese vending machines they used to have at the bowling alley, only replaced with fancy + delicious late night food. I had a pocket full of quarters from a day's worth of errands which I totally blew in like 10 minutes (all the machines take quarters, most expesive item is $1.75). There's like six things to order. We sampled as many as my laundry fund could afford:
+ Mac and cheese croquette (A++)
+ Mozarella sticks (A-)
+ Chicken nuggets (B)
+ Chicken wings (B-)
Monday. Nothing really. "Little Ms. Sunshine" w/ Becca (recommended, btw) and some random cookout (via dodgeball) on Rivington/Allen. And then naptime. (the end)
teendrama week in review! (extra action + dinner club + zolbert goodbye!)
Teendrama Week in Review! Live from Montauk! (me = on vacation for 10 days!). Woo-hoo!
Actually, I'm a wee bit behind. I got a good 50 photos from Alex's Bachelor Party that I still need to put online (maybe this wkd? Previewshere). But today is all about, er, me + Dianne + Youngna roadtripping to Tribeca to check out Extra Action Marching Band at the Knitting Factory last Saturday.
Quick backstory: Sean.S dragged me to see them in SF a few weeks back and now I'm there #1 superfan (Pilot to Gunner, anyone?). Show was a little more tame than the one in SF (perhaps because the crowd didn't know what they were getting themselves into?)
Still marching-band-marching-through-the-crowd is pretty rad.
And color-guard girls (and boys) sporting traditional marching band attire, waving flags, climbing rafters, crawling on floors.
I tried my bestest to convince some of my friends from home (er, MF, Mike.d, Jon, Adam, Mom, Dad... you're all lame) to go check them out when they played in Boston last weekend, but I think everyone stayed home watching the teevee. [video]
Rubulad at 3rd Ward
195 Morgan Ave.
Saturday 8/19, 11pm
Post show, met up w/ the kids who went on Lisa.S' fishing trip @ Back Room. Everyone stank of fish. I'm kind-of-clear on why Carney was rolling with rubber gloves, but whatever.
Fast-forward through a pretty uneventful week and we get Wednesday's mini-version of Dinner Club. Dinner Club = old school attempt to get all our Syracuse friends together once a month. All the dudes dropped out / got married / moved away, leaving me, five ladeeeeez and a better-than-you-would-have-expected lobster roll @ Elmo.
(five ladeeeez = Nat (in from SF!), Jackie, Jill, Lauren Hourse, Mel.W)
Dinner to drinks to signature shot at some pretentious spot in the meatpacking district.
jill's 29th bday + we love you, miss taxi internacional!
Hey, happy 29th birthday Jill! Jill = one of my bestest friends since Day 1 of college. As the legend goes, she picked me out of the Freshman Facebook the summer before college and declared that we'd be Best Friends Forever.
A bunch of us met up a Niagara in the East Village...
... by a bunch of us I mean, (hi, I forgot your name, you on the left) + Scuba Steve + er, Jill + Kevin DEVIL EYES K.
Not pictured = The Lauren Horse, Rob.G + Pablo + Ja Rule's pal Paul, Juila + Erica, Randy K., miscellaneous Bratskeir employees, and Josh Nova.
What is your opinion of a beauty pageant in the Taxi industry?
Oh, it's very good for the image of the Taxi industry. It was so exciting for drivers and all spectators. The pageant created a tremendous interest and the word is buzzing.
Do you think it should be expanded to include limousine, Black Car and yellow industry?
Absolutely, the more the merrier. May I suggest a new name? What do you think of Miss Universal Taxi?
Rumor has it the pageant is going down tonight (!!). It is my destiny to get into this event. My translators are working on it as we speak.
ps: Weekend forecast: Warm weather + no snow = looks like Killington isn't opening till next weekend. Sooooo, I have no plans!
two day bender: alex's 29th bday and dpj's 30th bday
Ugh. This was the most crunked up weekend ever with two back-to-back 6am nights (I am only slightly of proud of that). Let's start on Friday for Alex's 29th (34th!!) bday throwdown. Dinner + drinks + karaoke (this pic is from like 2am, but we'll get to that).
First up = dinner. Six of us @ Gyu-Kaku, a grill-yer-own-meats type of place near Astor Place. Little corns, little hot dogs, little meats. That bag of foil contains a bunch of mushrooms marinating in butter. Verdict: delicious.
Manlio and Kevin prepare to battle the meats. Beware of Kevin's patented Devil Eyes(tm).
Post dinner we hit up Porch Bar on Avenue C. About 20 people stopped by x 4-5 drinks each (or so it seemed) and the tab only came to like $150 = a birthday gift from the waitress?
I'm sorry I was talking shit about you the other day. You guys really are the bestest.
Yesterday's "Operation: Switch My A/C" was successful thanks to Randy and Lauren. We boxed that sucker up, threw it on my skateboard (best idea ever) and trekked to the Home Depot on 23rd & 6th where the sales people where super nice and not only let me return my opened A/C unit, but they also gave me cash back (since I bought it on my debit card). Like $350 in cash - it was just like I was at the casino!
So, I switched my 18,000 BTU box for a 14,500 BTU box (14,500 is, as I learned from the electrician in front of me in line, as big as you can go with a normal, 110 volt outlet.)
