2007/2008 ski season recap in 82 pictures - easily the best season in this history of teendrama!

opener.jpg

Hi and welcome to the recap I promised myself I'd get up on teendrama before I left for Sweden: 2007/2008 Ski Season Recap! Normally, I'd do this weekend-by -weekend but I was just so lazy / distracted this winter that I didn't get around to it, which is a huge shame since this was such a super sick season all around. Quick overview before we jump into things (and this is a loooong one) - 30 days, two *big* dumps in VT (15" each?) and *three trips of west* - Jackson Hole, Beaver Creek, Snowmass/Aspen - plus of course Sink or Stoopid Skim (sank, sorry for the spoiler, but you already knew that was coming). Anyway, ready? (oh, this pic? Mount Snow, somewhere around mid-season me thinks).

first_weekend.jpg

Early season wasn't looking so hot. Not sure when I took this (early January?) but I think we were all pretty sure this would be a classic VT season - snow, then thaw, snow then thaw, snow then thaw. Accumulation ruined by rain.

gnr_stratton_tix.jpg

Januarys are for black out weekends (MLK), so we hit up Stratton for freeeeeeeee courtesy of my pal Sue (she's the one who was so good to us at the Google Ski Trip!). Thanks Sue! (and hope I don't get you in trouble for writing about this! :)

gnr_stratton_crowds

Stratton + holiday weekend + gondola = lines. McD looks less then thrilled, but if I remember correctly this was a pretty sick day. The parks are so super nice at Stratton (Mount Snow, please take note).

mom's 60th bday surprise bday (+ bonus a tour through the Crowley's board game archive)

Why hello there! This is my first attempt in writing a teendrama recap in, um, forever. I got this trip to Sweden with Mr. Eric Freid all planned up in about 8 days from now and I really want to catch up on the tdrama before I take off... hence the 3 big posts this week (Mom's 60th, ski season recap, SXSW). A little teendrama philosophy real quick: I keep this site as kind of a scrapbook for myself and friends and when I fall far behind (e.g. now) it's almost like 6 months worth of good times just goes unnoticed. Think of the stuff I flaked on this past year: Mike + Jos' wedding, bday #31, SXSW 07, PICNIC @ Amsterdam, World Series, etc. I always find myself wanting to refer back to these memories as teendrama posts and its kind of a bummer realizing I never got around to writing a recap (disclaimer: last year is a weird case as its not just me being lazy w/ teendrama, instead I lost 9 out of 12 months of photos to one stolen laptop and one fried laptop). So, anyway, let's catch up!

Hey Mom, happy 60th birthday! (er, this was back in March, btw). My dad - notorious for messing up with big surprises for my Mom - wanted to surprise her with a huge surprise bday party. He had me and JJ act like we weren't going to come home for Mom's bday (using McD's St. Paddy's party as a cover and the old "but we'll be back next weekend for Easter!" excuse) but then managed to sneak home on Saturday to set up the *bowling alley* he rented out for the big bday surprise!

jj_noparking.jpg

Dad was stressing about the whole thing - "make sure there's enough drinks and food and make sure everyone parks in the back", etc. We did our bestest, even making a little makeshift "No Parking" sign so Dad could roll right up to the front without having driving by everyone else's cars. Slick!

(JJ's first album cover? "No Parking in the Zone of Love")

So here's the big moment of surprise - I think about 60 people where there, bartender + fully catered and the whole thing. Good job, Dad!

hey, so the Red Sox won the World Series again? How about that!

So, how about them Red Sox?? Wooo! I have pics from the ALCS (Game 2 in Boston! And Game 7 at Prof Thoms in NYC) and some pics from the bender I like to call Game 2 of the World Series!!!! (I was back at Fenway with MF - my head still kind of hurts)... buuuuuttt, as always, I'm 800 miles behind from catching up on the teendrama.

For now though, check out this video from 2004 (which I had to dig out of my external drive) - a little flashback to Dad + Gam + Jonathan being interviewed on MSNBC just after the Sox won the World Series. (J was working at NBC at the time, they were looking for a Red Sox family - I guess The Crowley's fit the bill?)

Gam = awesome. "You'll have it!" (btw, for more of Gam's TV internet career see Ask Gam)

ps: that's Kevin + Liz + the crew of the ConQwest 2004 crew up in the background. Good times!

Okay back to work... and Halloween costume planning - no Slutty R2D2 this year, but we'll be at the Flavorpill + Penthouse Bar afterparty.

Jonathan and Jackie get married - Eight years in the making told in 100 photos

start.jpg

Hey! Sorry to take so long to get these pics online, but it literally took me *days* recover from the wedding event of the season: J and Jackie's wedding!!! Just breathe that in a bit... my little brother all married up!! Now, let's rewind just about two weeks ago (Aug 31) and lemme walk you through the three-day event. (ps: Is wedding season almost over??? Four down, two to go!)

(Quick special thanks to Erin + Rob.J + Shoops for letting me steal yer pix!)

hotel_congrats.jpg

So, I wish I had some pics of Thursday's roadtrip up - me and McD picking up ten tuxes, grabbing a sandwich, getting stuck in midtown NYC traffic, realizing we're kind-of running late for the rehearsal dinner, then realizing we're definitely going to be late, then fielding the "this is NOT the type of thing you're late for - CLICK" phone call from my Dad, pushing the Hovepod close to 100mph, getting a $250+ speeding ticket (despite pulling the "I'm the best man and I've got all the tuxes in the back!" line)... and then pulling into ever-so-classy Holiday Inn in Schenectady, NY with exactly five minutes to shower and iron it up.

hotel_soapdish.jpg

And when I say ever-so-classy, I mean Duct Tape Holding the Soap Dish In Place classy. Ha!

Me + McD, all spruced up, race to the church (20 mins away). Dad calls me while we're stuck in traffic on the Schenectady backroads and gives me the whole "You know, you're so late don't even bother coming... just meet us at the restaurant" (which makes my heart sink - I'm the best man! I need to practice!") but of course ol' Dig is just joshin' me. By the time we rolled in - 20 mins late - the pastor was just getting her rehearse on.

rehearsal_church.jpg

You ever been to a wedding rehearsal? Usually a fifteen minute job - "You stand here. You walk with her. Then someone's going to sing annnndd we're done!" type of thing. Not this time. This one lasted almost two hours (someone back me up?) - we practiced walking in, walking out, waking in, walking out. Jackie and J practiced their vows (all of them!), the "I Do's", everything. By the end we were starving and exhausted. If I was still five years old, I'd be on the floor kicking and crying.

rehearsal_crabs.jpg

But that's okay cause the rehearsal dinner (!) had this whole raw bar spread! Crab legs, skrimps, oystahs = delicious. We barely made a dent in the thing (foreshadowing) - I mean, do you really need to stuff yer face with raw seafood on a stomach full of Bud bottles just 12 hours before your brother's wedding?

rehearsal_dens_j.jpg

Open bar, family + friends = good times. Please bathe in this magical scene of one of last photos of me + the unmarried version of my brother that you'll ever see on the teendrama.

600 mile double-header weekened: Sara + Stephen's wedding in VA + lobster cookout back in MA

intro.jpg

Friends, hello! And welcome to yet another wedding recap (this time Sara + Stephen of DC!). But wait, that's not all, scroll down and you get *special bonus footage* of the lobster cookout at Mom + Dad's back in Medway!

Let's start with Sara + Stephen. Sara = friend from high school. Stephen you would have recognized from Mike.D + JC wedding recap had my laptop + photos not been stolen). And yes, this is wedding recap #3 (of 5!) this summer. So let's rewind a little - back to July 21. Wedding was all the way down in Richmond, VA so I split the trip in two and trained it down to DC on Friday night to meet up with Lt. Rob.

drive_robmoore.jpg

Hey, speaking of which, here's the Lt. holding a picture of himself with the bride to be! Apparently taken a long time ago... what, 1993... aka, back when Rob had hair. Hahahah!

cutter.jpg

And speaking of good 'ol Rob (again), he just fwd'ed me this. And while GI Joe has no business making an appearance in a Sara + Stephen wedding recap, can Cutter be any more of a rip off of the Rob M. brand??? (even down to the "Lt JG" status! - come'on!)

map1.jpg

Oh, see? NYC -> DC. Thanks Google maps! ps: Amtrak is such a joke. Like $170 one-way to DC.

teendrama welcome back party (starring Mike.D's bachelor party!)

Holy sweet Jesus! The first teendrama entry in, what, two months!? Friends, in just a few short hours I will be in my busted ass truck driving back to Boston Cape Cod for Mike.D + Jos' wedding. And on this kind-of lazy Friday afternoon (I just ate about 8 pounds of gnocci), I figured what better way to kick this off with a recap of Mike.D's bachelor party (June 16)!

So, background? Mike.d = one of my bestest pals from high school. Bachelor party = also falls on Father's Day wkd (two for one!). Mike.d's brother Dave was in charge of organizing the whole thing - grabbing us 10 tix to the Sox v. Giants game and planning dinner and drinks. Big Dig scored a handful of tix to the game last minute (Crowley family outing) so me + J ended up catching the early Saturday morning Amtrak back to Boston together.

Amtrak = looonnng. We passed the time with nostalgic hangman. "Things you look forward to?" Middle school half-day! "Things Jonathan hates?" Acorns dumped on this head! Hahahahaha!

2:30p. Dad picked us up at Rt. 128 and gave us a ride into Fenway...

... where we had a contest in the parking garage to see who could create the most realistic throw-up scene given a mouth full of milkshake and a punch in the stomach. Fun!

Annnddd onto Boston Billiards (our default location for pre-game meetups) where we hooked up with the Driscolls (x3), the rest of the bachelor party crew, Katie and Matty (Katie's bf!) and Mom (?). Wait, Mom, where you there?

To the game!

Teendrama superfans, may recognize some of the regulars. Left to right, MF, Rob, mini DPS, Mike.D, Adam.K (aka Mike.D's roommate from school).

Christmas with the Crowley's - ver. 2007 (and bonus New Years in VT coverage! oh, and a video of Matt operating on his toe with a red hot skewer)

Hello Christmas 2006 recap! Man, I was gone for a good, what, two weeks? And just look at all the action packed excitement you missed! Let's start this off with Christmas Eve (we'll just fast-forward through those three days worth of last minute trips to the mall).

Now, if you remember from last year, Christmas Eve's main event is the Yankee Swap. 20 people + 20 gifts + everyone draws a number. Lowest number picks first, and after you pick (and open) your gift, you have the option of swapping for someone else's (already opened) gift. That person's gift (the one that just got taken) is then allowed to make *another* swap from all the opened gifts (though they can't take back what was just taken from them). Got it? Oh, and since whoever draws the #1 spot doesn't have anyone to swap with, that person gets their choice of *all* the opened gifts at the very end. So, #1 = the best number to draw. #2 = the worst number to get.

Now, let's hand out some numbers!

Poor Gam got stuck with #2(, sucker!)...

... though she chose wisely and got blessed with this this year's Must Have Yankee Swap gift, the garden gnome.

Meanwhile, Rob with #11 traded away whatever crap gift he got (scented candle?), quickly trading up for the gnome. I think the gnome traded hands two or three more times before Rob skillfully ended up with it after the final trade.

Anne drew the Golden Ticket which awarded her my gift - a mini reindeer made from recycled Christmas tree pieces (and yes!, purchased from the same dude that sold Mike + I the reindeer we dragged to Clay's holiday party).

Meanwhile.... Michelle, a dartboard? Other amazing gifts included scratch tickets, bottles of whiskey, some African vase, scented candles, Dunkin Donuts cards and a toy Coast Guard helicopter. What else? (Sorry, no half-eaten hamburgers this year)

Late night (and post Yankee Swap) one of our departing guests found this Yukon Cornelious doll on their car. A crpytic note from the anonymous gift giver was attached. Me + Dig tried comparing the handwriting to the 100 or so Christmas cards my parents had hanging on the walls, but we couldn't find a match. (It's like CSI: Suburbia up in here!)

And then a few hours later, I got an email from Yukon! I tried dorking out with the email headers, but no luck. The gift-giver remained a mystery for another 24 hours until she revealed herself to me over some good'ol townie-bar karaoke.

Okay, Christmas morning. For the non-VIPs who haven't done Christmas with the Crowley's, it goes down like this:

Round 1: Stockings (from Santa)
Round 2: Presents from Santa
Round 3: Family presents
Round 4: Go to Auntie Jeans and eat melted fruit cocktail.

thanksgiving is soooo 11 days ago (bonus: becca trapped in a machine and first wkd skiing!)

Wooo! Thanksgiving recap! Don't tell nobody, but I went home a few days early this year to spend some quality time with Mom + Dad + Princess Zelda. I have a few days of pictures to get through before we get to Turkey Day, but I figured I'd kick off this Thankgs.06 recap off with this pic of my brother with his balls hanging out. Happy holidays!

Wednesday. Picked up Jonathan at the Amtrak in Providence. Mom says no homecooked meals the day before Thanksg. so JJ and I hit up the Dave and Busters in downtown Providence. After milkshakes and ribs, we battled it out on the free throw machine under the understanding that loser is stuck saying Thanksgiving Day Grace. I got smoked. (And I'll take this opportunity to blame my lack of basketball skillz on the fact that I never had a hoop growing up. Thanks a lot, Dad.) video

While sinking crazy threes (er, sure), we missed my big debut on Boston's Channel 7 news talking about The Dodgeball. (Okay, okay I did catch it the night before in town w/ Rob + MF). Mrs. Moore caught the piece and said that I had a "handsome haircut." See for yourself (you'll need to click the "Watch the video" link on the top).

I logged some quality time at the Papa Ginos in Medway Center. Lunch with Mike, dinner with Rob. Fat Denny reprezent!!! Seriously, all this for under $10!

Wednesday nights are for townie reunions at Medway's finest townie bar, Sabina Doyles Mickey Cassidy's. We've been going for years (ever since they cancelled the alumn night at the VFW because there were too many fights) though every year there seems to be fewer and fewer people from our class (1994). I think we may have been some of the oldest dudes there. WTF!

Twenty minutes in and ran into everyone's favorite ex-prom data: Andrea.J!

This one's for all the fans. I was txt'ing back and forth with Caroline (who was also at some townie reunion back in the midwest) and told her I was hanging out w/ my crunked ex-prom date. She wrote back...

field trip back to medway: stacey's wedding + pats/colts @ foxboro

Okay, so only 12 days late on this one. I skipped town, er, two weeks ago (11/4) to head back to Medway. Agenda: Stacey.A's wedding on Saturday and the Pats / Colts game on Sunday.

A wee bit of drama on Thursday = my car was dead. I hadn't taken it out of the lot since the last trip to the beach. Jonathan and I had to Google up some jump-startin' instructions from his Blackberry. Jesus says: make sure the red parts doesn't touch the black parts.

And since when did the price of gas drop a dollar? Hoo-boy! (Seriously, last time I filled up in Hamptons it was like $4.15/gallon).

By the way, no, I *did not* stop at Wendy's (though I did get stuck in about an hour of stand still traffic on 91 - "traffic fatality" said the local police dept when I called to find the quickest way around the mess.)

Driving home alone = a good excuse to empty out my apartment. Surfboard + snowboard gear = I'm like Johnny Extreme!

I made a field trip to the mall on Saturday (new jeans = no more hole in the balls!) and then took the hoverpod to the carwash to vacuume out all sand from the beach. Stoopid carwash wind tunnel blew letters right off on my truck. Hello eBay!

Oh, so Saturday night... Stacey's wedding! Stacey = my next door neighbor (and younger sister of my Bestest Friend Forever growing up, Mike.A - teendrama fans may know Mike from such adventures as Halloween 2003 and Beaver Creek 06).

Anyway, Stace married this guy named Mike a few months ago down in [insert carribean island here] and then scheduled the post-wedding dance party / reception in the town next to ours (Franklin, MA) for when she got back.

happy birthday big dig!

Yesterday was my Dad's birthday (#61). I talked to him in the morning to see what his Birthday Masterplan was. His answer? "Go to the track!" (, of course).

Until my mom reminded me, I had forgotten that Big Dig and his buddies went in on a race horse last year - this guy, Bleacher Creature - who was schedule to run on Dig's bday.

My Mom emailed me these pics a few hours ago. Here: Dad (in his best Hawaii 5-0) + Katie bonding over the sweet sweet sight of thoroughbreds galloping.

I wrote her back: "did they win????"

She replied:

"did you get all the pictures? if you notice, the horse's color was blue. now look at the picture I took as they crossed the finish line: blue is towards the end."

(a.k.a. dead last?)

Oh well. Big Dig ice cream for everyone!

Friday June 23, 2006

my birthday was, er, earlier this week.

Hi. Real quick: birthday party on Saturday. Stop by if you're around. And thanks to Randy for cooking up this invite.

Saturday June 24, 10p
@ Loreley
Rivington Street (btw Bowery & Chrystie)

My birthday was actually on Monday. Mom + Dad came down on the Amtrak and took me + JJ out to dinner (read: Bestest Parents Ever). We hit up La Paella in the east village (J's recommendation). White wine + red wine + carafes of sangria = huh.

Three hour later, met up with a bunch of kids down @ Local 138. Mom got into her Kanye West flow, Dad + Dianne made fun of the rest of my friends, J + Dave dorked out with some Mario Kart DS Lite wifi.

Jonathan hooked me up with this sweet card.

Thanks Jay!

While my mom...

... baked me a batch of the same exact cookies I got when I was two years old!

Rumor has it she took a cookie decorating class (!!) just so she could frost these little guys up. Thanks, Mom!

ps: It's also rumored that Ernie + Bert are in the mail on their way down to NYC. Cookie Monster + Big Bird + Oscar look delicious though the Count kind of got the shaft. :)

And from waaaaayyy on the other side of the country, Little Sister Katie mailed me the exact same birthday card (even doctored up the same way too). She also made me a DVD of my most embarassing moments from home videos past (er, Cub Scout Safety Video anyone???). Thanks Shoops!

ps: bonus points for Shoops for using some sticky glitter stuff on the card.

So that's it. Birthday party Saturday. Wear something nice. Recap of that, plus such other slamming adventures as Adult Camp + US Air Guitar Championship + 2 week old World Cup shots (ha!) coming, er, someday (yeah right!).

action packed Memorial Day 2006 - wooooo! (or not)

Hi. Don't get your hopes up for a an action-packed Memorial Day recap - this one is just four dudes chilling at the beach.

Kind of a last minute trip - me + Randy + Grell + Josh drove down to my parent's place on the cape (Eastham, MA) for the wkd.

The forecast was three days worth of rain, but amazingly we had perfect weather (like, not-a-cloud-in-the-sky style weather) all weekend long.

Hit up Arnold's (twice) for the bestest lobster roll ever (better than any place in the stoopid Hamptons, sucka!). $13 bucks gets you a truckload of lobster meat.

Syracuse Graduation III: This Time it's Katie's Turn

Hi. So, er, this is so 3 weeks ago (May 13), but Little Sister Katie is all up in my grill about putting a special Little Sister Katie's Gradumacation update on the innernets, so here goes:

Hi (again!). My name is Dennis. You may have heard that I went to Syracuse Univ. (graduated in 1998). You may also know that as soon as I graduated, my brother started as freshman (graduated: 2002). But did you also know that my sister Katie *also* went to Syracuse? She started just as JJ finished... and graduated just a few short weeks ago. I've told this story to a few folks and always get the same two questions:

Q: Why Syracuse? Did your parents go there or something?
A: Nope. Way back in Spring 1994, I was trying to decided between going to school at Ithaca or Syracuse (er, both made the final round as they both had good communicatons programs). Most of my friends had already figured out where they were going (MF = Bates, Rob = Coast Guard Academy, Mike.D = Harvard), not sure why I was the last one to figure it out. Anyway, I remember calling Mike.D's house one day, getting his mom on the phone and her asking me about my college plans (to which I had no good answer) and she was like (btw, you need to say this in your best Mike.d's Mom VoiceTM), "Dennis, I know you... you want to go to a big school with lots of people. I think you should go to Syracuse." And so that was pretty much it. Oh, and then while I was at school, Jonathan would come visit and presumably saw what good times were at Syracuse (he also wanted to do the Newhouse / communications thing) and decided to go to SU as well. And while *he* was in school, Katie would come visit, see what good times were to be had and also decided to spend four year Syracuse.

Q: Yeah, but why Syracuse?
A: I dunno. In retrospect, I would never send my kids there. It's freezing. It's in the middle of nowhere. There's not even a good ski place nearby. (Actually, maybe I would send my kids there... but certainly not all 3 of them. I wonder if things would be more interesting - ??? - if me + JJ + Katie all went to different schools?)

Anyway, so oh yes, Katie's graduation: a three day event including our family + Gam + Anne + the Doherty's (aunt / uncle / cousins)... and Special Guest 2nd Cousins, The Doyle's (since my 2nd cousin Greg.D was also graduating). Me + J skipped out of work early on Friday (ssh) and made the five hour trek from NYC -> Syracuse juse in time to meet up Mom + Dad + Katie for happy hours @ Chuck's.

... now sorry for this super long intro paragraph, but I also wanted to mention that I've been to Syracuse twice since I graduated, er, 8 years ago (!!) - once for Homecoming 1999 (when that Crazy Girl bit me in the shoulder!!) and again for JJ's graduation (2002). And, since a bunch has changed since then, I broke some of this stuff down like this:

How Syracuse is Different #1: The old Chucks space (aka Hungry Charlie's) = now a Vietnamese restaurant, and the new Chucks moved into the old Sutton Mill (??) space. So, Chucks is now on the street level with big windows and high ceilings. Huh.

How Syracuse Is Different #2: The Regatta (the bar at the Sheraton Hotel, remember?) is now called The Seasons (lame). They took all the crew decor and junked it and made this place a generic, shitty hotel bar. $3 pitches though (for reals!). We took this pic on our Friday afternoon quest to hit all the bars on campus (er, we hit two bars + three pitches before we quit)

Okay, so back to this story. Crowleys + Doherty's (cousins) + Doyle's (2nd cousins) all met up for dinner at some places called Joey's (downtown Syracuse?). Mom told us to dress up all nice, but when we rolled in there the places was packed with frat boys in shorts / sororiety girls in flip flops and their grandma's.

Speaking of grandmas, Gam + Anne made the trek back from Florida for Shoop's big day. Here's Gam.

Me + JJ got Katie a brand new digicam as a pre-graduation gift. (Best Brothers Ever)

After dinner we headed back to campus to hit up Darwins (unchanged, btw, for all the SU kids out there)... though not sure why I don't have any pictures (boring?). Overall, I was a little disappointed at the lack of mayhem going on on Marshall Street considering at the weekend of my graduation we were jumping fences and ducking through windows to sneak past the 100-people deep lines for the bars. Not to mention how we were lighting shit on fire in the streets for JJ's graduation in 02. But this year the bars felt pretty empty. Huh.

Anyway, we called it quits around 2am, gave Greg.D a ride home and were about to call it quits and head back to the hotel... but wait, what is this? After hours on Livingston? Sure we'll come in and hang out with your friends, Greg!

Oh, beruit? Yes, I've played this before.

can I get a little Easter 2006 shoutout?

Yeah. So Easter. 10 days ago? Whatever! Got time for a few quick photos?

I had this masterplan of cutting out work of early on Good Friday and catching the 4pm Amtrak back to Boston. I even dragged my super big backpack into work. Fast forward a few hours and between Steve's 30th bday...

... Nathania being in town... (Jackie, why you gotta look all spacey?)

... and Chicken Marsala's bday, I decided to stick around for the night. We started off at White Horse Tavern for Steve's pre-birthday drinks (right around the corner from Magnolia Bakery... where I scored all these cupcakes, btw), then went to Lolita to meet up with some Google folk (Susannah + Sean + Dan.B) and then to Orchard Bar for KM's bday (which was packed with hipsters in headbands) and THEN to Libation (I know, I know).

ps: Libation is the only velvet rope club in the Lower East Side. I would never go there in 100 years, but we told Jackie + Cute Haircut Nat that we'd meet them there after leaving KM's. Looong line full of dudes with their collars popped and girls with the worse Strong Island accents ever. On top of that, cocksucker bouncers wouldn't even let us in...

Bouncer: Sorry, but we're not letting single guys in.
Dens: Yeah, but all our friends are upstairs.
Bouncer: We're not letting single guys in right now.
Dens: Er, they're all girls.
Bouncer: We're not letting single guys in right now.
Randy: Oh, how about if we're together? ("we're" = Dennis + Randy = love)
Bouncer: We're not letting single guys in right now.
Dens: How about we go grab some girls and then you let us in?
Bouncer: We're not letting single guys in right now.
Dens: How about we just wait in line till my friends get my text message and come down to meet us.
Bouncer: We're not letting single guys in right now.

... seriously, what a bunch of monkeys. In my frustration I may have said something along the line "WE ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THIS LINE WHO LIVE WITHIN 10 MILES OF HERE" but even so, it didn't make a difference.

Nat eventually got my text msg and grabbed us outside (me = her finacee for the night?). Worst place ever. (oh, and $10 cover).

ps: To the girls in the VIP room, thank you for sneaking us in and sharing your $200 vodka.

Anyway, so Easter right? My plan was to grab a few drinks, stop by and say a few happy birthdays and then go to bed at like midnight, take a nap and drive to Boston at 8am. We ended up leaving stoopid Libation at 4am (ugh), I was in bed by 4:30 or so, got up at 8 and was in the car by 8:30 (suck it!).

Made the trek from NYC -> Medway in like three hours (record time!), met up with my Dad + Little Sister Katie for some chicken parm sandwiches. Medway House of Pizza was rocking some "Denny" artwork.

Spend the first part of the afternoon driving around with my Dad, sticking "CROWLEY FOR SELECTMAN" signs in people's front yards.

sink or skim 2006 (spoiler: 6 of us sank)

End of the season as Mount Snow and you know what that means? Sink or Skim time!

For those who may have missed last year's adventure, on the last weekend of the season the nice folks at Mount Snow dig this 100 foot ditch in the snow, fill it with filthy pond water and invite people to try to skim across it on their skis or snowboards. $20 buys you one run. If you make it across, you win a free season pass (that's like $600!). If you don't make it across, you fall into the freezing cold water in front of a few hundred people.

I was the only one to give it a try last year. I was actually being super-cocky about it, "guaranteeing victory" to all my friends in NYC. When it was my turn to give it a shot, I came in with a lot of speed, a bit shaky, maybe at an angle... anyway, I fell... about 1/3 of the way in. So anyway, this year Jonathan + Katie + Matt.U + Sara.F (Katie's friend) came up to give it a try.

The problem with last year's Sink or Skim was that it was so cold out - like 30 degrees and half snowing / half raining. The forecast this year suggested that it would be sunny and warm (like 50 degrees!), but, alas, the weather screwed us again.

Mom + Dad (and special guests Mr. and Mrs. Donahue) came up from Medway to check out the scene. Oh, new rule this year = you need to wear a costume. I guess in the past they gave out free season passes to anyone and everyone who made it across the pond, but this time, of all the people who make it across, one winner is picked (apparently based on who has the best costume).

I busted out my Mom's 1992 ski getup (Yeah! Me and J used to fight - like literally brawl - over who'd get to wear this jacket back in the Black Mountain days). Also playing: Sara (the bunny), Jonathan (Dr. Aluminum, dur), Matt (getting his money's worth out of last year's halloween costume) and Little Sister Katie sporting Jonathan's old robot costume (awesome!).

Not shown = my helmet cam! (foreshadowing!)

We got out kind of early and made a bunch of runs - a few down Canyon to get a feel for the approach to the pond. We take this shit seriously! We were reviewing the tapes (er, digicam videos) from last year the night before trying to see what I did wrong (sketching my speed! Coming in at an angle! Too much weight on my back foot!).

my dad is running for selectman

Yeah, so Big Dig is running for Selectman in my hometown Not sure what a selectman does, or when the election is... but I sure can't wait to hold signs and wave at the one traffic light in Medway, MA.

In other news, about to head home for Easter in a few week hours (er, after drinks w/ Lauren + Jill + Jackie + Nat, and Susannah's party downtown and Chicken Karen Marsala's bday party on Orchard Street, and then a nap... and then a four hour drive back. Sweet!

Anyway, psych yourself up for easter with some teendrama!

Christmas with the Crowley's - ver. 2005

Hi again! So it's Christmas. Actually, it's after Christmas and I'm at work, er, working from home, er, okay I'm up in Vermont (but not skiing today cause it's raining, so I have all the time in the world on this fine morning to update the teendrama.)

So Christmas. My employeer was nice enough to give us Friday off, so I packed up the truck and headed home late Thursday night with Bee and her bicycle-messenger brother (we left late as to avoid the crazy last-day-of-the-transit-strike traffic).

Friday = all day shopping marathon. Saturday = half-day shopping marathon. Saturday afternoon = Christmas Eve.

Christmas Eve. Family comes over around 4:30 and then we leave for church at like 5pm (for the 5:30 mass - gotta get there early to get a seat!). JJ + Katie + me left a few mins later so we could execute "Operation: Raindeer Made Out Of Xmas Lights" (which I was surprised to learn my dad spent all day constructing in the basement - go Big Dig!)

Jonathan said my Dad's only instructions where (a) put them where Mom will see them when she drives up the driveway, and (b) don't make them look like they're humping each other (sorry, Dad).

We threw some $20 in the air for that classy Champagne Room effect.

The Crowley Family @ church. Katie, gang signs aren't for church!

... or are they? I found this pic hanging in the chuch hallway that leads out to the parking lot. Middle School Youth Group Harbor Trip REPREZZZZZENT!

six day thanksgiving adventure (+ first day of the season @ mount snow)

Six days worth of Thanksgiving pics. You ready for this? I think there's like 60 of them? (Longest. Teendrama. Entry. Ever?)

Start on Tuesday night where after a quick stop at Andy Krucoff's See You In Four Weeks When You Get Back From Israel party @ Lolita, me + JJ + special Thanksgiving guest British Jess started the trek back to Medway (oh, don't forget Jon Marcel and his pal, English Jess, who won the Free Ride Home raffle). We got home around 1am.

Wednesday afternoon = uneventful. Ran around doing Thanks.g errands - bought some scratch tickets, got my headlight fixed, and saw Harry Potter (all 5 hours of it) with my sister.

Wednesday night = Medway reunion at Sabina Doyle's Mickey Cassidy's. As legend has it, every year, the one townie bar in my cow-tipping small hometown of Medway, MA is packed wall to wall the night before Thanks.g with pretty much everyone you knew growing up.

Me + MF + Rob dined on fine chicken parm subs at Papa Gino's before heading on over to brave the crowds. We picked up Mike.D and his girlfriend Jocelyn on the way.

ps: not a typo.

Regardless of what the digi has to say, I can assure you that Lt. Rob is NOT losing his hair.

Rob laying the groundwork with the British Kitten. (let it be known that he's no MF when it comes to macking on Thanks.g. guests). By the way, that's a lot of beers.

weekend recap: kevin's 30th + harvard biz school + pats game

A few days late with the recap here, but I'm trying to see if i can stretch this into weekend recap, so shut up. Friday = Part II of Kevin.K's 30th bday blowout @ Loreley.

For extra credit, check out pics from Manlio + Grellan + Dianne + British Jess.

DJ duties split between Kevin + Alex + Gabe + Randeez (here) + me + Grellan (a.k.a. Worst. Set. Ever.)

ps: jk, Grell. er, not really.

Alex sporting our brand new dodgeball t-shirts (pow!). Super KB sporting, um, well, KB just hanging out.

I was planning on only staying out till 1am or so since I had to catch a train to Boston in the morning (more on that in a second), but that plan didn't work out so well...

... I ended up leaving around 3:30 and swunging by Harry's apt (Harry = dodgeball employee #3!) to see if his "It's 30 Degrees in November and I'm Having a Party on My Roof" party was still going on. After buzzing the wrong apt for like 10 minutes, me + Krucoff snuck our way upstairs to find a bunch of people making out and a crunked Harry nursing a 40oz bottle of the cheapest tequila that could be found in the LES. I was in bed by 4am.

Zzzzz. I got up at 7:30am, left my apt at 8am and caught the 9am train to Boston. Ravi and Sonia, the hosts of the hit in-car talkshow "DriveTime", picked me up from at around 1:30 and gave me a ride Harvard Business School.

[video of me on DriveTime coming soon, I promise]

the science behind football picks

I don't know anything about football. I mean, I know enough to root for the Pats and understand what's going on, but I don't track stats or play fantasy football or chat it up with people about the best defensive tackle in the AFC blah blah blah. Off the top of my head, I couldn't name 10 non-QB players in the NFL.

But I am in this football pool with Alex, my Dad, Jonathan, and like 50 other people. It's a weekly pick-em thing - whoever pics the most per week wins. Whoever has the most correct picks at the end of the season wins like $500 bucks.

Jonathan and especially my Dad labor over these pics every week. I don't know any better, so I just pick them at random. In last year's pool I tried tricking my friends into making pics for me ("What do you like more: pork chops or applesauce?" where "pork chops" = home team and "applesauce" = away team). I don't know how the line / spread / whatever gets set for games, but it seems like those people know what they're doing. And if you're in a pool where you have to beat the spread, the odds are like 50/50, right?

Anyway, this year, I simplified the process and whipped up a webpage that makes random pics for me. Every Friday I hit this page and then just copy and paste the picks into the Sportsline pool and that's it.

I was telling my Dad about this and he was like "You're just wasting your money!" (meaning the $50 I paid to get into the pool), but I think I beat him like 3 of the last 4 weeks.

I tied for third place for this week and, after 5 weeks, I'm tied for 3rd place overall. Pow!

boston fieldtrip recap

I was in Boston for a few days last week to speak at MIT's Emerging Technologies conference. Me + Josh Schachter (Del.icio.us) + Chris Heathcote (Nokia UI) we're on a panel together. (Stewart got swapped out last minute).

The folk at MIT where nice enough to throw us a reception post-conference. That's me at 3:00, then clockwise: Delicious Josh (best. nickname. ever?), Bryan Cantrill (a fellow TR35'er), Vanessa, Bryan's wife, Marissa, and Chris.H. (Sorry to Stewart + Brian's sister, who apparently didn't make the cut.)

ps: note my b-list, red speaker badge... which I swapped out on Thursday for a fancy (yet purple) TR35 Honoree badge.

Post-reception, we lost Chris first, then split with Stewart and Josh.S. I ended up heading in town with Vanessa and Marisssa and meeting up w/ MF and Genja (who were just getting out of class).

Next = drinks at the Beantown Pub. Okay, ready for Small World Story #1? G is telling me that Vanessa looks really familiar. And Vanessa is telling me about her twin sister from Penn. And then the two get talking and it turns out that G was roommates with Vanessa's twin sister during some random summer session at Penn State. Who knew?

Good story, eh? Anyway here's Marissa sporting her autographed copy of Technology Review.

last weekend of the summer? (aka: buckets of fun @ the cape cod flea market)

Last weekend of the summer. I had all these elaborate plans to haul a bunch of kids up to Vermont, but things started falling apart one person at the time (and Big Red 2.0 is all f'ed up - more on that later). On the Thursday before the weekend started we called the Vermont Labor Day Fieldtrip a bust - planning on just sucking it up and staying in the city instead.

Late Friday afternoon, JJ told me of his secret plans to escape the city on the Amtrak and head to the cape to hang out with Mom and Dad. I decided last minute to tag along (last minute = 10 mins before he left for Penn Station).

We caught the 7:30p train out of the city. The plan was to get off at Providence where Mom and Dad had left a car for us and then we'd drive the extra hour-and-a-half to the cape. The train ride was almost uneventful. We had baby Jaia tio play with most of the ride (we sat in one of those four-seats-facing-each-other setups... the train was *packed*) and the conductor scolded me ("Don't do that!") when I placed the ticket in my mouth so I could grab my cellphone. Stoopid.

Fast forward four hours later. We're in the Providence train station. We locate Jay's jeep (which Mom and Dad stashed in the garage for us). Problem is: it's full of shit from our garage. Like chock full of shit. As in: nowhere for a 3rd person to sit.

See, our house at home is full of old crap. The garage is packed, the loft is packed, grandma's room is packed. With old stuff that really should just be thrown out, but forrrreeeeever my Dad has had this master plan that he is going to make a fortune by selling all this old stuff. At a yard sale. And that is how the garage (and the rest of the house) is magically going to clean itself out. And that yard sale is going to be this weekend. And it's going to be awesome. I didn't really realize this when I signed up for the weekend trip, but whatever.

So, anyway, here we are in the parking lot with the jeep stuffed with crap. We did our best to re-org, making just enough room of the three of us to squeeze in.

The biggest offender was this dusty old sled (which I was *sure* was one of my Mom's prized garage possessions). Jonathan took it for a test drive down the parking lot steps to determine whether it was worth keeping. [video, 9.5mb]

(And, yes Mom and Dad, that's how the handle broke. Sorry.)

two pics for thursday

Big Dig was in town yesterday to help JJ move some stuff down from Medway. We all (me + Dig + JJ + Jackie + Meghan) went out to dinner last night - some crappy thai place on Clinton (next to Clinton Street Bakery). Maybe the crappiest thai place I've even been to. I left around 10p to meet Randy + Dianne + Pedro + Jen + Katie.D + YP + Brook @ Bua. I was still hungry from crappy thai, so me + K.Deets got some dumplings from the delicious little dumpling store further down St. Marks. I came home at like 12:30 to find Big Dig nekked and sleeping on my couch. Gross.

He's on his way uptown right now to meet me + Alex for a freebee Google lunch before jaunting off to Penn Station to head back to Boston.

Too bad he's not staying the night. No Data @ Lucky Jacks in about 10 hours. You should swing by. I think Grellan even hooked up some < $5 beer drinks specials. Well done.

random weekend in boston (+ dad's 60th bday!)

I took the stoopid delayed-by-two-hour redeye from LA -> NYC on Thursday night and get into my apt to find this note (left by my parents who stayed in my apt Wednesday night).

Nothing spectacular, but note (a) my mom made me another batch of cookies (this time, from the famed Neiman Marcus chain letter recipe. verdict = okay) and (b) my dad signing it with "Rock On". Ha!

Anyway, so with Dad's birthday on Sunday (#60!!) I decided to head back to Boston to surprise him. The trip normally takes about four hours. With Friday traffic, it took me about 3 hours just to get into Connecticut. Six hours total to get home. Sucks.

And then when I got off Rt. 495 in Mass (about 8 minutes from my house), I ran into about 45 mins of traffic due to a surprise hurricane that blew through our town, knocking down all sorts of trees (this one near Mike Geary's street - Stoneybrook Lane or something?)

This one down West Street (where I got all agro from the traffic and debated just driving under the fallen limb).

So, I rolled into Dad's surprise birthday dinner about an hour late. No worries though as the hurricane had knocked out the power all over the place. (Which is why you get this cool night-vision shot).

katie mckiernan gets all married up!

Hi there. Have you met my friend Katie? You may recognize her from the first teendrama entry ever or from elementry school photos (er, she's actually not in this photo, but you get the idea). I've known Katie since kingergarten and we've been pals since 6th grade (she actually introduced me to the world of hanging out with Rob + MF + Mike.D).

Anyway, she got married this weekend. To a fine lad named Scott. I took a bunch of photos.

The wedding was at Boston College. I spent the night in Boston so it was no problem to pick up Mike.d at BU, drive him to pick up his dry cleaning, then go to his apt, then go to the liquor store and then go to the hotel and then race to the wedding in Mass Pike traffic.

Anyway, at the wedding. Actually right before. Me, Mike, Mike and Rob. All pretty well put together (if I do say so myself) with the exception of Mike.D's brown shoes.

(says MF: "Are we not 30 years old?! Get it together!")

happy 21st birthday, Little Sister Katie (aka Las Vegas Family Vacation 2005)

Guess who turned 21 last week? Yup, Little Sister Katie!

Back in the day (er, the Jupiter days for me) we used to take Crowley Family Vacations(tm) to Las Vegas. I was 24 I guess, Jonathan was probably just 21, meaning Katie was 17 or so - which is no fun in Las Vegas (especially when you need to be 21 to gamble). So about 5 years ago (last time we were in Vegas) my Dad promised Katie that when she finally turned 21 we'd all head back out to Vegas for her birthday.

So....

Sunday. I actually was up in VT for the first part of the weekend. I woke up at 5am on Sunday morning and drove from VT to Boston to meet my parents at Logan Airport. By the way, when I say "Crowley Family Vacation", I mean Crowley Extended Family Vacation - I'm talking me + Jonathan + Katie + Mom + Dad + Gam + Anne + Auntie Jean + Uncle Neil + Cousin Michelle + Cousin Paul + Erin.

We flew America West (I know, I know... as Ms. Karen Marsala said, "America West? Who flies America West!?). Stoopid ghetto terminal didn't even have a bathroom!

Okay, so I left VT at 5am. Airport by 7:30am. Flight it at 10:30am. I dunno why we always need to get there so early. Grellan hit Katie up with an early birthday present - an autographed copy of the craps book that fucked us at Mohegan Sun the last few weekends. Enjoy!

cousin michelle's 30th birthday

Me + J + Katie packed up and went back home for the weekend as Cousin Michelle was turning 30 on Sunday (read: free dinner!). Jay also had to move his futon home (which we crammed into Big Red 2.0) so we ended up taking two cars (Katie rode shotgun with me).

Some of Rt. 95 text message chatter.

J: Let me catch up.
D: Never!
J: Enable missles.
D: Yoga flame!
J: Eat my dust 2A (Jonathan catching up and passing me)
J: Cute girl left
D: Turbo boost (me, catching up to see cute girl)
J: Nitro (J's jeep takes the lead)
D: Lasers (cue high beams)
J: Rear deflector shield (cue flashing tail lights)

Hmm. No pics of Saturday's journey to the mall (Operation: Get a New Car Stereo = unsuccessful), open house (too big), ice cream fieldtrip (black and white shake), driving range golf-off (I came in 2nd), or trek into Boston (no sneakers allowed), so let's just fast forward to Sunday afternoon.

Dinner at 5:30 in Taunton. I took my car, Jonathan went with Mom @ Dad.

It started with this at 70mph.

"so we meet again, Mohegan Sun" (plus bonus Cape Cod roadtrip)

Two weeks ago it was a Cape trip with a Mohegan Sun pitstop. This weekend was a Mohegan Sun trip with pitstop at the beach. I mean, last time we stopped at 'The Sun they were just giving away money. This time we returned with what we thought was better calculated luck thanks to Grellan's newly acquired Beat the Craps Table manual.

Leslie spend some quality time in shotgun studying up the differences between the Big Red and the Big 6.

I took advantage of the slow moving 95 scene to brush up on my proposition bets.

memorial day 2005: lots and lots of driving

Memorial Day Weekend 2005. So, me + Dianne + Grellan + Andy set off Friday night to spend a weekend up in Vermont. We werenever able to get our shit together enough for a Montauk beach house (sniffle) and nothing was really going on in NYC, so we figured we'd spend the weekend just lounging around, maybe hike the mountain (Mt. Snow), whatever. As long as we were getting out of the city, right?

So we left around 8pm. Made the obligatory stop at Exit 40 (read: Wendy's) and then decided why not just go to Foxwoods?

So we did. Kind of. We went to Mohegan Sun instead. Rolled in around 11pm, valet parked and hit the craps tables. By the time we left at 1am, Grellan had learned how to play craps (and was up $40), Dianne lost her slot machine virginity (and was down $20), Krucoff was up $150 from one lucky pull at the slots and I was up about $240 thanks to the Spanish-speaking woman who stood next to me at the craps table rolling hard eights for 20 mins straight. (the the record, Grellan and I held the dice for about 180 secondstotal).

ps #1: Def Leppard and Tesla on June 27th.

ps #2: Cinderella + Quiet Riot + Firehouse on July 21st.

(btw, Mohegan Sun pit stop = the new Exit 40. Just wait till ski season kicks off again)

$240 up and about 1.5 hours out of our way. Next stop Vermont.

We rolled into Vermont around 3:30am to find the place a little cold and with NO RUNNING WATER. That means no sink, no showers, no flushing. Mom and Dad just put a new washer and dryer in there so I figured maybe the water never got turned back on. We all went to bed thinking we'd just deal with it in the morning.

mother's day weekend back in boston

I was back in Boston this weekend. The trifecta of Little Sister Katie's return from a semester in France, Gam and Anne returning from a winter in Florida, and the chance to wish Mom a happy Mother's day in person was all very interesting, but it was ultimately the promise of a Chinese Food Mother's Day Bonanza that got me on the Amtrak Friday evening.

Here, Saturday morning. Mom snapped this photo before we left to pick up Shoops @ Logan Airport.

We waited at the airport for an hour or so before Katie busted through customs and I had the chance to sport my "Welcome Back" banner.

Hold on a sec as we rewind to about an hour earlier... Back at my parent's house as I admire my artistic handiwork:

Dad: Er, you spelled "sister" wrong.
Me: Fuck.

apple products vs. the crowley family

It's been no secret that my Mac hates me. Actually, every Apple product I own (except for my iShuffle hates me). Alex (official troubleshooter for all my Mac woes) swears it's "user error", but when Apple Mail won't undo deleted messages, randomly loses messages and tells me I have only sent 8 messages in the last three months then something else is wrong. My AirTunes (wireless iTunes thing) often just starts blanking out in the middle of songs and my iPod gets about 40 mins worth of battery life before needing a recharge.

Then, I saw this on my brother's website today - his Powerbook hinge just broke off, rendering his laptop unusable unless the screen is propped up against a wall or something. Apple wants him to pay $900 to get it fixed.

I've had similar shitty experiences at the Apple Store. When I rolled in with my 40-minute-iPod they told me I could pay them 60 bucks to buy Apple Care so I could leave it over night so they could test it. No thanks. (Better story: when a DVD got stuck in my PowerBook, and my modem stopped working, and my screen was flickering and my USB port broke and my speakers stopped working, I brought the thing over to the Apple Store and because I had Apple Care they fixed it in a mere 5 weeks!)

Anyway, I was chatting with my friend PW about this stuff this morning. When I showed her the pics of Jonathan's screen she was like, 'It's covered in dust! He probably doesn't even take care of it!" "Ah whatever," I thought as I ended my IM session and double checked my iPod battery (which I had charged yesterday) before I went for a run. Half full.

"Half full" apparently last 12 minutes. By the time I got to the FDR, the battery was done. I managed to get it to start up again after about 5 mins of no music, but then it gave me the stoopid "Repairing Disc" icon. And after that I got the "Question Mark Folder" icon.

Apple hates me. And my brother. And the whole Crowley Family.

We picked up an iMac for my parents over Easter. Their Windows ME machine they've had for a few years was too messed up from spyware to use or even fix. My Dad wasn't too happy as the Mac was more expensive than a PC, but I wanted to get my Mom (who just got a new digicam) up on iPhoto and Flickr. I also picked up a new printer for them.

Between the two of them, all my Mom and Dad want to do is check AOL, email photos and print fantasy baseball stats. AOL works fine, iPhoto doesn't recognize AOL as a mail client so they can't easily send photos (what the fuck!), and the printer stopped working the day I left (every print job gets stuck in the queue and then gets deleted). My dad calls me every day asking me to troubleshoot it remotely (which I have no idea how to do). I can fix most of this stuff when I get home for Mother's Day, but come'on!

Er, this one is my fault though. I was out w/ Marc.J and Katie.D one night and took a digger over a parked bicycle (don't ask), fell into the street as my shoulder bag (er, carrying my laptop) broke my fall.

Busted scree. $1600 to fix says Apple (understandable, it's my fault). So I bought a new one. What else am I going to do? Buy a stoopid Windows machine? (the end)
